Introduction of lesson

The purpose of this particular lesson was to introduce students to the idea of matrices. At first, I toiled with various ideas of how to make the concept of matrix algebra grab their initial attention to promote intellectual discussions. The inspiration of this introducton stems from my love of music, in particular my love of the artist Lauren Hill. The reason why I chose to go to her “imaginary concert” is because of the popularity of her music with the students. I knew the students could visualize being there, and hearing her poetic words.

From the concert, I drew the idea of a shirt vendor selling T-shirts to her adoring fans. The vendor’s role in the lesson is important. It shows how mathematics has a place in one's daily activitivities.
